The iPhone 4S has reportedly helped a man find out that his wife was cheating on him. The story came out earlier this fall when the man posted on an online forum that he had used the app "Find My Friends" to prove that his wife was at a boyfriend's house and not where she told him she was.
The case is another example of how the world of marriage and divorce continues to change as new technologies are developed. The man reportedly bought his wife the new iPhone and installed the app before giving it to her. He did this because he suspected his wife of infidelity. He then called his wife to see where she was and it did not match with what the app was telling him. In South Carolina, adultery is grounds for divorce.
This man lives in New York, but will likely still be seeking a divorce. The story shows how spouses are increasingly turning to social media and new technologies to gather evidence for divorce court. This app will allow a person who has installed it to see where another person who installed the app is -- if that person has allowed access to that information.
Divorcing couples are often reminded to beware what they say on social media sites because, more and more often, evidence is collected on these sites to be used in child custody and divorce cases. Electronic communication, such as text messages and emails can easily be found and kept as concrete evidence in divorces, so divorcing couples should take care in what they express through those means.
